10 Things You Didn’t Know About Botox

10 things you didn't know about botox

Out of all the non-invasive anti-aging procedures you can get at your dermatologist’s office, Botox is by far the most popular.

How it Works: Botox treats wrinkles associated with muscle movement, such as those in between and around your eyes, the so-called frown lines and crow’s feet. By restricting muscle movement in these areas, you smooth out these wrinkles and prevent them from etching deeper into your skin.

Despite its popularity, there are many misconceptions about this treatment and facts about Botox that might surprise you.

Whether you’ve gotten the treatment in the past or are a newbie – here are 10 things you might not know about this popular cosmetic procedure.

1. More People Get Botox Than You Think

Over 4 million Botox procedures were performed in 2015, up 21% from the previous year. Source

More and more people get this procedure every year, as the public becomes increasingly aware that injections are safe and deliver excellent results when administered correctly.

If you haven’t gotten Botox yourself, chances are you know someone who has. People are becoming more open about it, reducing the stigmas that were associated with injectables in the past.

Even celebrities are owning up to getting the procedure. “Everybody does it,” said Robin Wright, who plays Claire Underwood on “House of Cards”. The 50 year old actress credits her eternally youthful glow to getting “sprinkles” of Botox twice per year.

2. The Safety and Efficacy of Botox Has Been Proven Extensively

Numerous studies have proven time and time again that injections are both safe and effective, when administered by a qualified professional.

As long as this is the case, research has shown shown that there are no short or long term side effects associated with the procedure.

3. Botox Won’t Give You a Frozen Face

One of the reasons people can be hesitant toward getting this procedure is that when they think of what someone with Botox looks like – they recall somebody who has gotten too much of the product, or had it done badly.

That “obvious” look is usually the result of someone who has overdone the treatment, or had it administered by someone other than a board-certified physician.

One of our favorite things is that when it’s done in the just the right amounts and in just the right places it looks completely natural. Because these people don’t have that “had-something-done” look, we usually don’t even realize their fresh-faced appearance is thanks to a visit to their dermatologist!

4. The Treatment is Becoming Much More Popular Among Men

The “Brotox” trend is real! The number of Botox procedures administered on men has increased 258% in the last decade and 84% in the last 5 years.

While women have historically dominated the market for cosmetic treatments, we’re seeing more and more men coming in for Botox and other procedures. Men are becoming more proactive about addressing appearance-related concerns, increasingly associating looking good with confidence and professional success.

Like women, they’re also becoming more open about getting these treatments, reducing the stigma among their peer groups and countering outdated beliefs that Botox will give you that expressionless “Real Housewives” look.

5. There’s No “Perfect Age” to Start Getting Botox

There's no perfect age to start botox. 10 things about botox

Some people start getting the treatment in their 40s-50s and beyond, while others take a more preventative approach and start in their late 20s or early 30s.

If you’re on the younger side, Botox can help you correct expression-related lines before they get a chance to etch deeper into your skin as wrinkles. We recommend consulting with your dermatologist about the best time to start treatments based on your unique situation.

6. The Procedure Takes Less Time Than You Think

There’s a reason why Botox is known as a “lunchtime procedure” – administering the product only takes about 10 minutes!

Before the procedure, your doctor will talk to you about your goals and ask you to make a few different facial expressions – such as frowning and squinting. Doing this allows us to see where your wrinkles are forming. We then administer the product accordingly using a tiny needle.

7. The Results Are Gradual

You will start to see visible results starting about 2-3 days after the procedure. Most people see the full effect about 2 weeks after getting Botox, and the results will last at least 3 months.

8. The More Often You Get Botox, the Less Product You’ll Need

Over time, with regular treatments, you will need to get less of the product injected to see the same results.

As the product is used more frequently, your muscles tend to respond to the treatment for longer periods of time. It causes the targeted facial muscles to weaken because they are less active, so you will require less and less product to smooth out wrinkles to the same degree.

9. It’s Critical to Get Botox with a Board-Certified Physician

Not at the spa, not with an esthetician, not at the salon. We can’t stress this point enough!

If you want to guarantee safe, effective results – you must get Botox treatments from a board-certified physician such as a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon.

This is the only way to make sure you will get the results you want, both in the short and the long term. Visiting an unqualified practitioner for Botox treatments is not worth the risk – after all, you have to wear your face every day!
