Microdermabrasion

During microdermabrasion a minimally abrasive handheld instrument is used to take away the uneven outermost layer of skin to reveal the healthier skin underneath. The process is similar to lightly sanding off the top layer of skin. Microdermabrasion also helps to thicken the collagen in your skin, making it more taut and smooth.

Microdermabrasion is most effectively used to:

  • Reduce age or sun spots
  • Improve other forms of hyperpigmentation or melasma
  • Lessen fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduce enlarged pores and blackheads
  • Lessen acne and acne scars

Microdermabrasion is a great way to make your skin look younger and more healthy by taking off the oldest layer of skin on the top through exfoliation. A series of microdermabrasions can be used to target a specific area or it can become a part of an ongoing skin care maintenance program with Dermatology Center of Acadiana. Common Concerns and Questions with Microdermabrasion

Is there any downtime afterward?
There is generally not any downtime with microdermabrasion. In some cases the skin will be slightly red for a day. Depending on what type of treatment you need, there may be some slight flaking.

How many treatments will I need?
Most patients will get started with 3 treatments spaced out every two weeks or every month. The number of treatments varies significantly on a case by case basis depending on your skin and what you are looking to treat, so consult your dermatologist to find out more about your specific needs. Almost everyone can benefit from periodic microdermabrasion treatments every now and again to brighten up their skin’s overall appearance.

Do I need to do anything after treatment?
In the first day or two after treatment we recommend patients to make sure they apply sunscreen and are careful about sun exposure because your new layer of skin that has come to the surface will be especially sensitive. Your dermatologist will advise you on the best sunscreen for your skin.

Are there people who shouldn’t get Microdermabrasion?
If you have cold sores or acne breakouts, extremely sensitive skin or have taken isotretinoin for acne please let your dermatologist know beforehand, as it may be best for you to do another treatment.

How long do treatments need to be spaced out?
Most patients can have another treatment the following week if they prefer, but we usually do our treatments every two weeks or once a month.

How long does it take?
It generally takes about 30 minutes to treat the face. Other areas will vary by size.

Is Microdermabrasion safe?
Yes. Side effects beyond some redness and minimal flaking are extremely rare. As with all skin procedures it is much safer to get microdermabrasion performed by an esthetician with many years of experience who is under the supervision of a board certified dermatologist such as at Dermatology Center of Acadiana to make sure they have the knowledge and training to perform procedures safely.
