As you age, it is imperative that you view caring for your skin to be a part of aging healthily. Our skin changes in many ways as we age. One of these changes is the reduction of oil production, making the skin drier, thus making moisturizer a more important part of the daily regimen. Another important thing to remember is the need for adjusting the regimen over time with skin needs. While there are many wonderful treatments available for your aging skin, it’s good to know that there are things you can do along the way to age gracefully. We’ve put together 5 skin care tips for healthy aging.
Top 5 Skin Care Tips for Healthy Aging
1. Protect your skin from sun
You love the sun, but not the damage that it leaves with your skin. Over the course of our lives, we accumulate years of sun damage. On top of which, with age, the skin is less able to correct the DNA damage caused by free radicals from UV, making sun protection even more important. When enjoying activities outdoors, be sure to apply sunscreen to all skin that clothing will not cover. The best sunscreen is one that delivers broad-spectrum protection, at least SPF 30, and is water resistant. For more details check out our post on 5 things to look for in a sunscreen.
2. Wash and moisturize regularly
As we age, our skin becomes drier. We also lose elasticity in our skin, which may cause sagging and fine lines to appear. It’s important to wash away the dirt and grime that builds up every day, both in the morning and evening. Be sure to apply a quality sunscreen with SPF 30+ in the morning and a retinol cream in the evening. Take the time to establish a routine and don’t neglect it. Just as important as washing is moisturizing. Moisturizer seals the water in our skin, which then minimizes the appearance of fine lines, keeping it supple and healthy. Depending on your skin type, you should moisturize 1-2 times a day.
3. Stop smoking/restrict alcohol intake
We all know that smoking is devastating to our lungs, but did you realize that smoking highly affects your skin, as well? Tobacco smoke is filled toxins that make your skin age quicker with premature fine lines, wrinkles, and leathery skin. While a number of the cosmetic dermatology procedures available can help to minimize the impacts of habits like these, prevention is still always the best medicine.
4. Get your beauty sleep
It’s vital for our body to have time to recoup and prepare for the next day. Studies show it’s best to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night. It’s best to do this in a dark room, as well. The darkness aids in your body’s ability to create melatonin. Healthy rest habits can boost your appearance through a glowing complexion and fewer dark circles under your eyes. Treat yourself well and get some good sleep.
5. Eat healthy foods
A healthy diet shows with healthy skin. What we put in our bodies greatly affects our skin. Be sure to fill your diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. Some healthy options are as follows:
- Blueberries
- Lemons
- Spinach
- Salmon
- Nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc.)
- Tomatoes
- Sweet potatoes
- Avocados
