Lotion Up!

For your days of fun in the sun, pack a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher! You will need to reapply at least every 2 hours. You’ll also need to reapply after a dip in the pool or an outdoor jog, as no sunscreens are 100% waterproof or “sweatproof”. Find out more about what to look for in your sunscreen.

When in doubt, apply and reapply! Studies have indicated that most people do not apply nearly as much sunscreen as they should. For each application, one should use about a teaspoon of sunscreen to the face and about as much as would fill a shot glass to the rest of the body. Cover Up!

One of the best ways you can keep your skin healthy and beautiful is to simply avoid overexposure to the sun.

Try enjoying the beach from the shade of an umbrella! Limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are at their peak.

There are also fashionable ways to keep yourself sun-safe! Try wearing a wide-brimmed hat to your next beach party. You’ll look like a celebrity and you’ll protect more of your skin. For bonus points, protect your eyes with large sunglasses that block UV light.

Drink Up!

You are what you drink, especially in the summer! As outside temperatures rise, don’t let your skin’s hydration fall.

Water is key to the health of your entire body, including your skin. Water plays a vital role in circulating blood, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating toxins. Just like all the other organs of your body, your skin is made up of cells that must have water to function. When your skin cells are “thirsty”, the health and appearance of your skin suffers, exaggerating signs of aging.

This summer, be sure to stuff your beach bag with plenty of water. Health professionals suggest drinking about eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day. Take time every day to ensure you are drinking enough water to fuel your body and keep your skin stunning!
