How to Kick Dry Skin to the Curb

By October, we all start craving some cooler weather – especially in the South. But the seasonal dip in temperatures and humidity can take a toll on our skin.

If you know you have a dry skin type, it’s especially important to get ahead of the winter weather by starting a dry skin prevention skincare routine in the fall. Here’s how to kick dry skin to the curb:

Invest in a Humidifier to Maximize Moisture

Using a humidifier in your home or office will add moisture to the air and keep your skin hydrated. Run the humidifier in rooms you spend the most time in, including your bedroom.

Don’t Use Harsh Soaps on Your Face

Morning showerers, beware. Washing your face in the morning can rinse away your skin’s protective oils if you grab for your body wash. Instead, use a gentle cleanser, and avoid face washes with hydroxy acids. While these products can be great for the hot, humid days of summer when we need oil control, during the winter, they will only add to the dryness.

Use the Right Moisturizer

While your light summer moisturizer might feel more blendable, dry skin can benefit from a moisturizer that contains extra ingredients like hyaluronic acid to help retain water. If your skin still feels tight, smooth on a hydrating serum before applying moisturizer.

Exfoliate Once a Week

While you should never pick at or peel flaky skin (letting the flakes fall away naturally is the best approach), using a gentle exfoliant once a week can prevent dead skin cells from building up and clogging your pores.

Calm Irritated or Inflamed Skin

While you should make an appointment with your dermatologist right away if your skin looks unusually irritated or inflamed, you can soothe redness in a pinch by using a redness-reducing cream with an anti-inflammatory such as niacinamide. We recommend doing a small patch test first to make sure your skin will react well to the product.
